SI-2 Front Valley

前谷 〔前谷〕 qián gǔ

Alternate names: 手太阳 shǒu tài yáng, Hand Greater Yang

Channel: SI, hand greater yáng (tài yáng) small intestine channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the ulnar aspect of the little finger, slightly distal to the metacarpophalangeal (mcp) joint, at the border of the red and white flesh.

Classical location: On the outer side of the little finger, in the depression in front of the base joint. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: The dorsal digital artery and vein arising from the ulnar artery and vein. The dorsal digital nerve and palmar digital proprial nerve derived from the ulnar nerve.

Action: Courses wind and resolves heat; disperses swelling.

Modern indications: Headache; eye pain; tinnitus; painful swollen throat; febrile disease; scant breast milk.

Classical indications: Cough and fullness in the chest; headache; swelling of the neck preventing turning; stiff nape; swollen pharynx; nosebleed.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.1‒0.3 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 1‒3 cones; pole 5‒10 min.

Point groups: Spring (yíng) (water) point.
